Santa’s Arrived At James MacIntyre

Santa’s Arrived At James MacIntyre

It’s the man we all love to see at this time of year and we’re pleased to announce that he’s being celebrated at Moorcroft. The breaking news is that Father Christmas has gone to pot at The VQ, but don’t worry, it’s all in the name of ceramic art.
Moorcroft designer, Vicky Lovatt recalls with fond memories trudging down terraced streets as the snow-clad bottle ovens invite her imagination to create Christmas in The Pots.
The depiction of ‘Old Father Christmas’ or ‘Old Winter’ as a merry old man in a fur-lined robe begins in the early 17th century just as the art of slip-trailing was beginning to take shape in ceramic history. In his earliest form, Father Christmas was not the bringer of gifts for small children, nor did he come down the chimney. He simply wandered around from home to home, knocking on doors and feasting with families. This is certainly the merry spirit of Potteries’ folk. And so it is with Christmas in The Pots, that Vicky’s Father Christmas is the perfect present himself!
